Our mission statement: To provide people the opportunity to live a better life, is the answer to the fundamental question “Why do we exist?” It is the center of the whole purpose for Orchid’s existence. Yes, we make devices for use in the orthopedic and medical markets – and this is “what” we do. As Simon Sinek points out so well in his viral Ted Talk, “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” (‎).

To Provide an Opportunity for People to Live a Better Life

Our Core Purpose should guide and inspire us. It should help us understand the importance of what we do every day. For most of us, the most common reason we work is obvious. We need to provide for ourselves and our families. Our jobs at Orchid help us do this, but I believe our work should also serve a greater purpose. When I do the math and realize the amount of time we spend at work, I am amazed at the significant time investment we all make. At the end of the day, week, month, year or career, I feel that there should be much more to our jobs than just bringing home a paycheck.

Applying Orchid’s core values are something we should think about every day. In my role, I am fortunate to spend a lot of my time interacting with many people, from many areas of the organization. Within the Orchid Lansing division, I spend time in the offices and on the shop floor and interact with people who have a very long tenure as well as those who are just starting their careers with Orchid. With so much change it is important we keep our Core Purpose and Core Values in front of us at all times. There is a wonderful environment here at Orchid; some may say it is enviable.
