Reflecting on our 2016 Highlights

Posted: Tuesday, February 21, 2017

Orchid has grown and improved over the last year, not only as a company, but as a community. At Orchid, our core values are the driving force behind what we do, and working as a team, we are able to meet and exceed our goals. As we move into 2017, we’d like to reflect on some of Orchid’s memorable activities from 2016.

Leadership Training Provided in Lansing and Connecticut

Orchid’s Operational Excellence Team designed a training program for sites that are prepared to take their Lean Journey to the next level. The program, launched at the Lansing facility, focused on culture, leadership and putting tools in place to drive value for our customers. The training was so successful that the Connecticut facility volunteered to provide the training at their site. Both groups were excited to continue building momentum and practice what they learned.

Contributions to Charity

Orchid’s Connecticut employees participated in a 5K Fun-Run and Wellness Walk to benefit the Reach-out Program, which provides recovery resources for the younger generation in the area.  The group also took part in the Leap for Literacy. The Literacy Center was able to raise more than $10,000 for their event and the Orchid team took home multiple awards for their participation.

The Alabama facility contributed to Relay for Life for the third year. The team was able to raise $12,000. They relayed to honor and remember several of our employees and family members and look forward to the event in the years to come.

Orchid’s Detroit employees completed the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk and raised $614. The Orchid team started walking in Chene Park and made it all the way to downtown Detroit.

Thanks to Orchid’s Oregon facility, the Orchid team was able to raise $1,000 in the race for the Colon Cancer Coalition back in August! To start off the fundraising, Orchid had a farmer’s market and bake sale. Employees donated food from their gardens and made bakes goods which in the end helped Orchid raise $300. The Colon Cancer Coalition raised more than $30,000 for their cause.

Throughout September, the Chelsea facility raised money to end world hunger. Employees were able to raise $530 towards the charity. Ten people, and two babies in strollers walked the Crop Walk and the Orchid team can’t wait to participate in this event again!

Orchid Oregon Presented With an Award from Exactech

Orchid Oregon received “Best Supplier of the Year” award from Exactech. This is the 6th year Orchid has received this award, and we have also received awards for “Best Quality” and “Overall Supplier” in previous years. “Exactech have been a long-standing partner for us. Receiving this award means a lot to everyone here at Orchid and reinforces the importance we put on quality, delivery and customer service by the appreciation and recognition we received from our customers,” stated Nic Seymour, General Manager at Orchid Oregon.

Coating Capabilities in China

Orchid invested in the Chinese orthopedic market by providing Vacuum Titanium Plasma Spray (VPS) at their Suzhou, China facility. The expansion of capabilities supports strategy to provide full value stream services to the local market in Asia and compliments our current hydroxylapatite (HA) coating services.

The Impact of Orthopedic Surgery

Employees at Orchid enjoy hearing stories about the impact that their work has on other people’s lives. The stories leave us feeling inspired and serve as a reminder to us about why we do what we do. We were lucky to have two people share their stories not only with us, but also to allow us to share their stories online for the rest of the industry to hear as well.

Scott Blumenstein, one of Orchid’s Sales Engineers, had trouble with his hip due to a combination of arthritis, injury, age and past athletic activities. With decrease mobility and restricted movements, Blumenstein needed surgery, and in November of 2015, he decided to have it. Recovery time was quick and he was playing golf within 6 weeks after the surgery. He said that he is proof that we “provide an opportunity for people to live a better life.”

Phil Nardone, a retired police officer, shared his story about his hip surgery. Before the surgery, Nardone played hockey up until he began to have pain in his hip. The pain was severe enough that he could no longer skate and had difficulties driving a car, walking and even sleeping. Nardone was miserable. It wasn’t until he decided to have the surgery that the pain went away. He made a fantastic recovery and claims he now only has soreness. He said he couldn’t be happier with what we make and is in his right hip right now.

If you know of anyone that has a story about the impact of orthopedic surgery and would be willing to share with us, please let us know!

Orchid Hits the Tracks!

Orchid hit the tracks when they were invited to the fall Talladega race by Haas Factory Outlet! Haas wanted to show their appreciation for our partnership by offering us tickets and a logo on one of the cars. Kurt Busch drove the #41 car with our logo. Five employees were able to attend this event and they had a great time while they were there!

An End and a New Beginning

Mike Miller, Orchid’s former CEO and founder, started a company 28 years ago that has grown into the best manufacturer in the business. Miller started a business that was later acquired and grew through investments and acquisitions to become what is known as Orchid Orthopedic Solutions. Orchid was Miller’s passion and dream; he truly did “provide an opportunity for people to live a better life.” We are sad to see Miller go, but we want to thank him for everything he did for his employees, customers and the time he put into building this company. As Mike Miller retires, a new CEO begins his journey at Orchid, Jerry Jurkiewicz. Jurkiewicz’ long term goal is for Orchid to be considered the best in the orthopedic industry by taking the emphasis on commercial and operational excellence from good to great!

Thank you, Mike Miller, for your dedication to Orchid. Orchid hopes the rest of your journey in life goes well and we are happy that you will not go far by staying Vice Chairman of the board. Congratulations Jerry Jurkiewicz on your new position, we welcome you into the Orchid family.
