Orchid Observes Training Exercises for the Local Fire Department

Posted: Wednesday, March 21, 2018

On Thursday, March 15, employees from Orchid’s Lansing location were excited to provide a training location for our local firefighters! Orchid purchased a structure and offered it to the Delhi Township Fire Department for training exercises.

Over 15 volunteer firefighters and support staff from the Delhi Township Fire Department – Station 21 were practicing structure fire search and rescue.  A 4 person team enters the structure filled with simulated smoke to practice search patterns and communication.  This is crucial training for the firefighters, as they experience near 0 visibility conditions and have to rely on, not only technology, but the ability to effectively communicate to people inside and outside the structure to make the rescue.  Before the demolition of the structure, there is a planned execration of personnel from the basement to simulate a firefighter falling through the floor of a structure and to practice accessing a metal roof.

These operations were observed by Orchid employee Keith Wasilenski, who was invited to enter the smoke filled structure to see the conditions the firefighters have to negotiate first hand.  After exiting the building, Assistant Fire Chief Brad Drury gave the best advice we all can use, “Make sure your smoke alarms are in working order at home.”

This is a valuable reminder that we need to be aware of our surroundings, know where our escape routes are at, have functional fire alarms and extinguishers available near our stations, and if you are in a fire situation, to get out quickly.

We thank the Delhi Township Fire Department for their service to our community and all of the first responders of our local communities, that day in and day out, put their lives on the line to save ours.
