Orchid Announces Program for the Development of Orthopedic Cutting Tools

Shelton, CT – Orchid Orthopedic Solutions announced the arrival of Cutting Instrument Solutions, a new program to assist those in the orthopedic industry with developing, prototyping and manufacturing orthopedic cutting instruments.

Orthopedic Cutting Instruments typically include drills, burs, taps, reamers, blades and other items for various procedures across the orthopedic spectrum. As a leading industry supplier for orthopedic products, Orchid saw a need to support industry professionals and OEMs with their cutting instruments. Although cutting instruments are necessary for most procedures, many orthopedic OEMs focus their capabilities on developing implants, often placing a lower priority on cutting instruments.

John Reach, MSc, MD Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Yale University School of Medicine and Director of Yale’s Foot & Ankle Surgery program, presented a snapshot of the actual time spent by a surgeon throughout a series of orthopaedic operative cases. Over 90% of direct surgeon operative time is spent manually interfacing with tools used for cutting and sculpting tissue. He reviewed the historical and scientific literature, demonstrating the critical but often overlooked importance of appropriate cutting instruments and how the quality of these tools ultimately impact a patient’s surgical outcome.

Orchid’s program is focused on simplifying the design process through an online survey that collects critical design inputs. The survey is then sent to a project manager who can prepare a proposal for the design of the instrument in 24-48 hours. The proposal includes engineering costs to design and detail the instrument as well as ballpark manufacturing costs. Upon completion of the design, prototypes may be quoted and built within 2-4 weeks. Overall, Orchid is leveraging its extensive expertise with cutting instruments to help companies reduce time to market on the items that may not necessarily be core to what they do on a daily basis.

“CIS provides value to our customers through its ease of use, wealth of information and quick turn-around for design and manufacture of cutting tools,” said Mike Miller, CEO of Orchid. “We are pleased to offer this program to our customers and look forward to providing more opportunities to help them in the future.”
