Impact Academy Concludes the First U.S. Tour in Farmington Hills, MI

Impact Academy started as an idea for Orchid’s commercial team to share knowledge about our industry and customers with employees through lunch and learns. Between October 2021 and July 2022, we have visited all nine Orchid locations in the U.S. to connect employees to the impact they have on our customers, their products and, ultimately, the patients.

Impact Academy Concludes the First U.S. Tour in Farmington Hills, MI

The last stop was “Orchid Detroit” in Farmington Hills, MI. The location specializes in applying two types of coating on orthopedic implants.

  • Titanium Plasma Spray (TPS) coating creates a porous surface that allows bone to grow into the implant – a technology that has seen growing demand because it eliminates the need for utilizing bone cement during surgery.
  • Hydroxyapatite (HA) coating is the same mineral that is found in bone, and this coating INVITES the bone to grow. HA can be applied on top of porous coating to maximize both effects.

Bone in-growth coating eliminates the need for a surgeon to use bone cement during surgery, so these “cementless” or “press-fit” hip and knee implants have been growing in the market.

The Impact Academy team also discussed the history of the facility and the technology, other trends that we’ve seen in our customers’ products and how Orchid Detroit fits into the Orchid organization as a whole.

The team is now discussing plans for taking Impact Academy to Orchid’s two Europe locations.
