Orchid can now offer world-class coating capabilities in the U.S., Europe and Asia to its customers. The acquisition also creates a base for Orchid to further expand its capabilities in China to serve the growing demands in the market.
Acquires Alhenia AG
The combination of Alhenia and Orchid further strengthens Orchid’s position as the leading orthopedic coating company by adding new and novel coating technologies, geographic reach and an expanded customer base. The combination also creates an integrated local supply chain in Europe – from castings and forgings to fully finished, coated and packaged implants.
Acquires Sandvik Medical Solutions
Sandvik Medical Solutions (SMS) brings a global footprint and a high value of expertise in casting and forging, as well as machining of implants and complex instruments to Orchid, allowing us to better serve our customers in the U.S., Europe and Asia. The addition of SMS, the world's largest independent supplier of cast implants, makes Orchid the leading orthopedic implant supplier globally. SMS was founded in 2007 with a platform of companies having histories dating back to 1973.
Altor Fund III Acquires Orchid
The Altor funds are private equity funds comprised of the “Altor 2003 Fund” with committed capital of EUR 650 million; the "Altor Fund II” with committed capital of EUR 1,150 million; and the “Altor Fund III” with committed capital of EUR 2,000 million. Advised by Altor Equity Partners, the Altor funds invest in companies with a focus on value creation through growth initiatives, strategic development and operational improvements. Together these funds have invested in over 30 platform investments and more than 30 add-on acquisitions since their inception in 2003.
Acquires Azary Technologies
A privately held company located in Shelton, Connecticut, Azary built a strong reputation offering regulatory and quality assurance outsourcing services for the medical device market. Orchid acquired Azary Technologies to boost its capabilities in quality system development and regulatory services, including 510(k) submissions, FDA compliance activities and Canadian compliance. Azary has been integrated into Orchid Design.

With MACDEE, Orchid added a whole new area of capability to its technology portfolio: plastics manufacturing. MACDEE had built its reputation on a foundation of injection molding. Seven presses, the ability to perform CNC machining of plastic implants and instruments and several ISO Class 7 controlled environment rooms also accompanied the purchase.
Bio-Vac had spent 20 years building a worldwide reputation as a leading supplier of unique surface treatments for implant fixation, including both spherical bead and irregular particle coatings. With its acquisition of Bio-Vac, Orchid added significantly to its porous coating capabilities.
By 2005 when Orchid acquired Bio-Coat, the company had emerged as a true leader in the hydroxylapatite (HA) coating field. In addition, it was the only company in the world to offer medical implant vacuum plasma sprayed coatings, and the first to offer the only true, pure titanium, roughened surface for implants.
Acquires Unique Design
In order to address a need in the industry for contract design and development, Unique Instruments started Unique Design. Unique Design offered comprehensive concept development and in-depth design services, as well as functional prototyping, qualification testing and pilot manufacturing.
Acquires Astro Met, Inc.
Merged with the coating division of Stealth Medical Technologies, this acquisition added new depth to the company's position as a leader in orthopedic porous coating.
Acquires Hy-Vac Medical Technologies
Located in Collierville, Tennessee, Hy-Vac specialized in the porous coating of orthopedic implants. Its acquisition broadened Stealth's already expanding capabilities. Hy-Vac became Stealth’s coating division.
Stealth Medical Technologies Founded
Stealth Technologies was founded as a supplier of high-performance engine components. In 1994, the company changed its name to Stealth Engineering & Technologies and built its reputation by supplying complex net-shape forgings to the orthopedic implant industry. Stealth was one of the two original companies comprising the Orchid family.
Unique Instruments Founded
One of the two original companies comprising the Orchid family, Unique Instruments brought more than 25 years of superior craftsmanship to the partnership. Its attention to quality on implants, surgical cutting accessories and complex instruments offered a difference that surgeons could notice from traditionally used products.
